Internal Past Due Payment Plans
Students whose accounts have been placed in internal collections may be eligible for an interest-free past due payment plan. Available payment plan options are determined by the amount of the outstanding balance.
Past due payment plans provide eligible students with the opportunity to resolve outstanding balances through scheduled monthly payments before the account is referred to an external collection agency.
- Monthly payments are automatically drafted on the 5th of each month using the payment method selected during enrollment.
- A one-time, non-refundable enrollment fee is due at enrollment. The fee varies based on the length of the payment plan.
- Additional late fees will not be assessed while the payment plan remains active and in good standing.
- Past due accounts enrolled in an active payment plan are not subject to external collection efforts.
- Review our Step-by-Step Enrollment Guidance.
Important Registration Information
Enrollment in a past due payment plan does not remove registration restrictions. Students will not be permitted to register for a future term until their account balance is paid in full.
Failed Monthly Payments
If a scheduled payment on the 5th is unsuccessful, a second payment attempt will be made on the 20th of the month. If the second attempt is also unsuccessful, the payment plan will be terminated.
Nelnet Business Services will assess a $30 non-refundable returned payment fee for any payment returned on the initial draft attempt.
Payment failures may occur for several reasons, including:
- Insufficient funds
- Incorrect bank account or credit card information
- Expired credit or debit cards
- Closed or restricted financial accounts
Terminated Past Due Payment Plans
If a payment plan is terminated due to missed or unsuccessful payments, the remaining account balance becomes immediately due and payable.
Accounts with terminated payment plans are no longer eligible for the University's internal collections process and will be referred to an external collection agency.
Any collection fees, attorney fees, court costs, or other charges permitted by law may be added to the outstanding balance and become the responsibility of the student.
